Overview

Built in 1941, the main terminal of Reagan National Airport earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. But, with extensive concrete damage caused by rusted rebar, exterior portions of this once distinguished building had become an eyesore.

Custom Solution

The airport called in the experts from Cathedral Stone® Products to help restore the main terminal to its 1941 appearance. Cathedral Stone took and tested core samples from the building’s exterior, and ultimately recommended Jahn M90 for the concrete repairs, and Jahn M30 and M40 grouts for injection of the cracks. These corrosion-resistant, vapor-permeable products—available in North America exclusively from Cathedral Stone—were specially formulated to match the physical properties of the main terminal’s substrate. The mortar and grouts were also tinted to match the color of the original masonry.

More than 7,000 repairs were required, ranging in size from 6” x 6” to 20’ in length. Cathedral Stone® provided a 10-year labor and materials warranty, which required: specialized on-site training for the masons who would be making the repairs, inspection of all substrate preparation, and supervision and inspection of all patches after curing.

Three years later, the patched areas are indistinguishable from the original concrete. A second stage of repairs on the remainder of the building is underway using the same process and long-lasting, environmentally friendly Jahn Mortars.
